Vanta CJIS alternative for vendors and agencies that only need CJIS
If CJIS is the only framework standing between you and an agency contract, a broad compliance automation platform can be more tool, and more contract, than the job needs. Cjis is built only for the CJIS Security Policy: a readiness score by policy area, one record per agency, a personnel register with fingerprint checks and Security Addendum pages, and an agency report you can send the day it is requested. Plans are published and start at $49 a month.

The short answer
Vanta added a CJIS framework in 2025 and it is a strong choice for a company that already runs SOC 2, ISO 27001 or HIPAA in Vanta and wants CJIS checks next to them, with automated tests pulled from cloud, identity and device integrations. Cjis is the better fit when CJIS is the main requirement, when you sell to many agencies and each one wants its own file, or when you are an agency or county IT team rather than a SaaS company. Many gov-tech vendors use both kinds of tool at different stages.
- Pick Vanta for multi-framework automation across your cloud stack
- Pick Cjis for CJIS-only scope, per agency records and a known monthly price
- Use both if SOC 2 lives in Vanta and agency CJIS files live in Cjis

What each option costs a vendor
Vanta does not publish list prices. Third-party purchase data puts most contracts somewhere around $10,000 to $20,000 a year, with add-ons and extra frameworks on top, and you get a firm number only from their sales team. That is reasonable value if you need SOC 2 and three other frameworks automated.
Cjis publishes every plan. Starter is $49 a month, Team is $199, Pro is $499 and Enterprise is $999, and yearly billing halves the monthly rate. Team covers three agency reports, which is where most vendors in active procurement land. Compare every limit on the CJIS compliance software pricing page.
- Starter at $24 a month billed yearly for one agency report
- Team at $99 a month billed yearly for three agency reports
- Pro at $249 a month billed yearly for 25 agency reports
- Enterprise at $499 a month billed yearly with no agency limit
Why per agency records matter more than automation for CJIS
CJIS has no central certification and no single audit. Each agency, and the CJIS Systems Agency in its state, reviews you on its own terms. One wants its own signed Security Addendum, another wants your engineers fingerprinted in its state, a third sends a 90 question spreadsheet that still references v5.9.5. Automated cloud tests answer the technical questions well. They do not tell you which engineer is approved at which sheriff's office.
Cjis keeps shared controls and policies once, then a record per agency on top: the systems that agency uses, the people approved for it, the agreements it holds and the open items. When the agency asks, you send its report as a PDF or a read-only link. See how this works for CJIS compliance for vendors.
- One shared set of controls, reused for every agency
- People, agreements and approvals stored per agency
- A report scoped to one agency, revocable when the review ends
- The same structure every time, so reviewers find answers fast
The personnel side is where CJIS reviews slow down
Most agency questions about a vendor are about people. Who on your team can reach CJI, when were they fingerprinted, which training level did they complete and when does it expire, and did they sign the certification page for this agency. Cjis tracks all of it in a personnel register with reminders 30 and 7 days before training expires, flags anyone with access and no recorded check, and records the date access was revoked.
- CSV import of your current staff list
- Security awareness training level and due date per person
- Addendum certification tracked per person and per agency
- Background re-investigation reminders by your state's rules
When Vanta is the better choice
Be honest about your situation. If your enterprise customers also want a SOC 2 report, your auditors already work in Vanta and most of your evidence is cloud configuration, Vanta's integrations save real hours and one platform keeps your security team in one place. Vanta also offers a trust center and vendor risk tools that Cjis does not. Cjis does not run automated tests against your AWS or Okta tenant; your team uploads evidence and links it to the control it supports.
- You need SOC 2, ISO 27001 or HIPAA alongside CJIS
- Your evidence is mostly automated cloud and identity checks
- You want a public trust center for enterprise buyers
Questions buyers ask before switching
Does Vanta support CJIS?
Yes. Vanta released a CJIS framework in 2025 that maps automated checks for access management, cloud configuration, logging, incident response, endpoint security and policy documentation to the CJIS Security Policy. It suits companies already using Vanta for other frameworks. It does not make you CJIS certified, because no such certification exists.
Is there a CJIS certification I can get from either tool?
No. The FBI does not certify companies, and neither Vanta nor Cjis can issue a CJIS certificate. Compliance is shown agency by agency through the signed Security Addendum, fingerprint-based checks of your staff, training records and evidence that your controls meet the policy. Read what CJIS certification really means before you write sales copy.
Can I use Cjis and Vanta together?
Yes. A common setup is SOC 2 and cloud evidence in Vanta, with the CJIS personnel register, Security Addendum pages and per agency reports in Cjis. Export evidence from one and attach it in the other. Cjis exports registers and checklists as CSV and policies and reports as PDF.
How fast can a vendor get started in Cjis?
Most teams finish the 12 question readiness check in about two minutes and see a score for each policy area. From there you import staff by CSV, assign owners to the gaps and build the first agency report. Starter covers one agency; Team covers three.
