CJIS compliance for body camera and digital evidence vendors
A body camera or digital evidence management vendor that stores footage tied to an investigation holds criminal justice information for the agency, so the FBI CJIS Security Policy reaches your cloud, your admins and your support desk. Cjis gives your team one workspace to prove it: a readiness score by policy area, a register of every person who can open evidence, policy templates and a separate report for each agency. Plans are published and start at $49 a month.

What agencies ask a body camera vendor
Police departments buy evidence platforms through procurement, and the bid package almost always includes a CJIS section. The agency answers to its state CJIS Systems Agency (CSA), so it pushes the same questions down to you: where footage lives, who can reach it, how it is encrypted and whether your staff passed a fingerprint-based check.
- Footage linked to a case number or a suspect is treated as CJI once it is in your system
- Support engineers who can open an agency tenant need screening and training
- Each agency signs the CJIS Security Addendum with you, and often with named staff
Where CJIS touches an evidence platform
Our CJIS compliant software page lists what an agency expects in the tool itself. For the cloud layer read CJIS compliance in AWS, Azure and Microsoft 365.
| Stage | What the policy asks | What you document |
|---|---|---|
| Upload from camera or dock | Encryption in transit with FIPS validated modules | Module, version and certificate number |
| Storage in the cloud | Encryption at rest, location, provider agreement | Region, key custody, provider Security Addendum |
| Redaction and review | Role based access and audit logs | Who can view, edit, export, and the log retention period |
| Sharing with prosecutors | Controlled dissemination | Link expiry, access logs, recipient list |
| Chain of custody | Audit trail that cannot be edited | Log design and how long you keep it |
| Staff and support | Fingerprint check, training, Addendum | A personnel record per person and per agency |
| Incidents | Notice to the agency and its CSA | A written plan and the contact path per agency |
Who on your team needs screening
Evidence vendors usually have more people near the data than they expect: platform engineers, DevOps on call, tier two support, customer success managers who join a screen share, and the field staff who set up docks on site. Anyone with unescorted logical or physical access to unencrypted CJI needs a fingerprint-based record check and security awareness training, and several states want it repeated for each state. Cjis keeps role, access level, check date by state, training level, expiry and the agencies each person is approved for.
See CJIS background check requirements for what the check involves.
- Import the staff list by CSV and tag who can reach evidence
- Reminders 30 and 7 days before training expires
- Log the day access is removed when someone leaves
One record, a separate report for every department
A vendor serving ten departments in four states answers ten reviews. Cjis keeps shared controls and policies once, then a record per agency with its people, agreements and open items. Export a PDF report or a read-only link scoped to one agency, so a sheriff's office never sees another department's names. Start from the CJIS policy templates for access control, incident response and the system boundary, then adapt them to your platform.
- One set of controls mapped to CJIS Security Policy v6.0 and v5.9.5
- Evidence dated and attached to the control it supports
- Open items by agency, so sales sees what blocks a signature
Ways evidence vendors keep the CJIS record

| Option | Cost | Strength | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spreadsheets and a shared drive | Staff time | Nothing to buy | No reminders, rebuilt for every bid |
| Cjis | $49 to $999 a month, published | CJIS only, per agency reports, personnel register | No automated cloud tests |
| Multi-framework platform | Quote only | Automated tests across frameworks | CJIS is one framework among many |
| CJIS consultant | Per engagement | State know-how | A snapshot that ages |
Plans that match an evidence platform sales pipeline
Starter at $49 a month covers one agency report. Team at $199 covers three agency reports and fits a vendor in several active bids. Pro at $499 covers 25 agencies, and Enterprise at $999 has no agency limit. Yearly billing halves the monthly rate. Compare limits on the CJIS compliance software pricing page.
Questions body camera vendors ask about CJIS
Is body camera footage criminal justice information?
Footage tied to a case, a suspect or an investigation is generally handled as CJI once an agency stores it with you, and agencies and states treat it that way in contracts. Ask each CSA how it classifies your data, then document the answer. Treat it as in scope unless a state tells you in writing that it is not.
Is there a CJIS certification for body camera platforms?
No. The FBI does not certify products or vendors. You show compliance to each agency and its CSA through the Security Addendum, fingerprint-based checks, training records and evidence of controls. Read what CJIS certification means before it goes into sales copy.
Do our support engineers need fingerprinting?
If they can open agency evidence in a readable form, yes. Encrypting footage so support staff cannot reach the keys can take them out of scope in many states, but each CSA decides. Keep the list short and documented.
Can we host evidence in a commercial cloud region?
Some states accept it with FIPS validated encryption and keys held by the agency or you, others expect a government region. The provider's agreement does not replace your own controls. Confirm with the CSA before the bid.
How long until we can answer an agency CJIS questionnaire?
A few weeks if your controls exist and you need to record them, a few months if you still need MFA on every path or a year of logs. Fingerprint processing alone can take weeks per state. The readiness check shows which areas are open today.

What Cjis is and is not
Cjis is an independent compliance workspace, not affiliated with, endorsed by or certified by the FBI or the CJIS Division, and not legal advice. It does not run automated tests against your cloud account and it never stores CJI or footage.
